Vintage Papers and Exciting News

Notes from the Driftway

Hello, Reader

For months, I've been creating a new online class.

But before I tell you about that, I want to answer the question I get asked most often:

“Where do you FIND all those vintage papers?”

On the blog, I have a new post that answers that question:

Vintage Papers for Letterpress and Collage

In this post, I share: my favorite sourcing spots, what makes “good” paper for printing and collage, and how to build a collection on any budget

This guide gives you everything you need to start gathering beautiful materials.

Now, about what I’ve been working on…

For years, I’ve taught letterpress printing and abstract collage in person. Students come to my workshops wanting to learn how to work with vintage papers, create typography-based art, and explore printmaking—but most don’t have access to a letterpress.

So I’ve created something new: an online course that teaches you how to create letterpress-style prints and abstract collages without needing expensive equipment or a dedicated studio space. And I teach you how to use a home-studio style press. My version of letterpress printing isn't traditional, but the results are perfect for mixed-media art.

I’m writing the final pieces this week (resource and supply lists), and the class will open on December 1st.

If you’ve ever wanted to:

  • Learn lettepress printing
  • Work with vintage papers and create collages
  • Learn abstract composition
  • Add typography to your creative practice

…this course is for you.

Early bird pricing: $247 (available Dec 1-14)

Regular pricing: $290 (starts Dec 15)

I’ll share more details soon, but I wanted you to be the first to know.

For now, go read that sourcing guide. And when you’re ready to learn what to DO with all those beautiful papers—how to print on them, collage with them, and turn them into finished artwork—I’ll be here on December 1st to show you.

Warmly,

Sarah

P.S. Do you already have a stash of vintage papers? Or are you just starting to collect them?

Sarah Z Short Notes from the Driftway Yesterday, we put out the bird feeders, and I'm watching the birds discover them, thinking about how thrilled they must be. And I'm just as happy, because enrollment is open for the course I’ve been working on for months. It’s a strange feeling—part excitement, part nerves because I have so much of myself in this class, as I share my complete process from collecting papers to framing gallery-ready art. If you’ve been collecting vintage papers and are...

Sarah Z Short Notes from the Driftway Odd Number, 20" x 16" Hello Reader, I lifted all the plants off the cedar chest, regretting my choice to move the massive jade by myself. Inside, wrapped in newspaper, were all the china and glass bits that I’d collected, but never used. Somewhere, there had to be a china tea cup and saucer, and I had to unpack most of the chest before I found the cup. No saucer, but I found one of those in the cupboard. I was on a mission to make myself a proper cup of...

Choose your own way into this piece, composed of letterpress-printed vintage book pages.. This collage invites multiple readings—perhaps you'll first notice the abstracted letter fragments, or maybe your eye will follow the flow of paper waves cascading across the composition.
